Dillo Con Un Bacio ♥️
A bag filled with kisses.
Luisa Spagnoli was no ordinary woman, she was driven, her creativity & ambition led her to create the now famous Baci Perugina. In the early 1900s she founded two of the most important companies in the town – the chocolate factory Perugina and the women’s clothing company that bears her name.
Both continue to be recognised as symbols of Italian style & quality.
Being the practical sort, she developed a plan to help improve the lives of her employees. Near the workplace, Luisa had terraced houses built as well as a swimming pool for the employees, leisure activities such as dances, football matches, sports competitions and parties were regularly organised to help the employees keep fit and healthy.
During the WW1 when all the men had left for the front, Luisa – like many other women- found herself alone to take care of her home & her 3 children.
So being one of the most forward looking business owners she opened a nursery in the Perugina factory, allowing her female employees to continue to work.
In 1922, with both the chocolate factory & the clothing business to run, Luisa developed a unique way to use up extra local hazelnuts, while also creating one of the most iconic of Italian chocolates, naming it Baci – the Italian word for kisses.
According to sweet legend, Luisa fell in love with Giovanni Buitoni, a founder of the Perugina chocolate company, and he with her.
She wrapped romantic notes around the chocolates that she sent to Giovanni for his inspection.
Inspired by their secret love, she began to make her bite-sized chocolates as delectable as her messages: silky, dark-chocolate exterior enveloping gianduja, a whipped chocolate filling blended with finely-chopped hazelnuts, and all finished with a whole hazelnut crown.
Nearly 100 years later, Perugina continues the tradition of Luisa’s Baci (Italian for “kisses”)
The company remains located just outside of Perugia, a hilltop town in central Italy, where the two star-cross’d lovers first met.
Unwrap a Baci and discover messages of love and friendship shill nestled inside the signature silver and blue foil.
